OK Noobs, time for a Veteran to give his best advice so you can progress quickly and become one of us. Its been a while since i started playing, but I remember what i did to progress at the level I am right now. I'm pretty good with every gun and in every type of battle (Gun Master, Battlefield, Multiplayer, Headshot, etc.), so you can trust me ! 
First of all, Overkill medals (OM) are difficult to obtain, so dont waste them on anything stupid like medkit, air strikes, useless guns and upgrades or the Mystery Pack. The best way to earn OM is in Gun Master (GM) challenges (Metro Station or Eastern Port), but don't think you can go there and win easily, because I'm always there and I like to win !!! There are other good players also (OIO, IBRAVER1, KILLED, TEEJ890, just to name a few), so Gun Master might not be for you in the near future...get lots of practice before daring to enter this challenge or you will find yourself going in a corner sucking your thumb and crying a river while calling for your mommy!!!
In both GM challenges, there are 9 rounds to win. Each round gives you a reward and the more you win, the bigger the rewards. If you lose, you can start over or buy a rematch with OM (remember: don't waste your precious OM). I'm not 100% sure, but the rewards are, from round 1 to 9 : 100 XP, 250 XP, 500 XP, 1 OM, 2 OM, 3 OM, 5 OM, 10 OM, 25 OM. 1 OM at a time is better than a slap in the face, so try your luck anytime to win a few...don't despair, I have seen some noobs climb up to round 8...before I sent them back to round 1 !! LOL !!
Another good way to earn OM is to play in Multiplayer. You don't need to own the gun to play, but you will have the stock gun only (without upgrades), so it will be more difficult to win. I recommend you to play with friends of your rank, so you don't always lose to the veterans. You can add friends in your Profile or by pressing the ADD friend button at the end of a Multiplayer match. A very good advice I can give you if you play random players in Multiplayer : never use air strikes or grenades or you'll get flamed by veteran players, especially COBRA (he is far from diplomatic and will be on your back for a long time !!). Seriously, we don't like it...it's a shooting game and not a bomb droping game. So man up and play like a real trigger happy !! Multiplayer is a 4 days contest where you can win Multiplayer points (MP). When it's over, you get rewarded with OM and XP (experience points). The maximum OM and XP you can win are 50 OM and 5000XP, but you need 500 MP for that (good luck champion!). Each 10 MP gives you 100XP and 1 OM. If you make more than 500 MP , you won't get more OM or XP, but they will be added to your total MP for leaderboard.
Of course, you can also rank up quickly (win lots of XP) by playing in Battlefiled waves. Everytime you rank up, you get 5 OM. In the beginning, ranking up is pretty fast, but the higher the rank you reach, the more XP you need to change rank. The kings of XP are currently (and maybe forever) FOXRAN and POONMEISTER...have respect for them since they are third age folks!!
In battlefield waves, you can also win a lot of money to buy good guns and upgrades. You can waste money if you want, because it's easy to earn, unlike OM.
Now that you know how to win OM, XP, MP and cash, let's talk about the best way to play this game. First, you have the choice to buy the Glock 18 or the Beretta 93R...go with the Glock 18. Upgrade it as much as you can and play in Battlefiled waves to get some shooting experience and earn cash. The best upgrades to get (for every gun) is a good scope for accuracy and a high capacity magazine to avoid reloading all the time. After that, you can go for increasing the damage, stability and fire rate. The reliability increase is the least of my worries. Some upgrades cost money and others cost OM. Don't waste OM on upgrades for low rank guns. Keep them for the better guns.
You need to play a lot of times in Battlefield to earn lots of cash, but with the Glock 18, it's a pain in the ass! So buy a better gun that you can pay and upgrade with cash. I don't remember which one can be bought with cash, but if there is one in the following list, buy it : MP5, PP-90M1, Kriss-Vector, ACR. When you like a particular gun, allow yourself to upgrade it to the maximum with OM, but I suggest you buy and upgrade the guns that are used in GM. The GM metro guns are (in order) : Glock 18, MP7, MP5, PP-90M1, USAS-12, ACR, PDR, M249, SV-98. The GM Eastern Port guns are (in order) : FN F2000, M240B, MK14A0, L86, AA-12, HK416, AK47, MSMC, Beretta 93R.
If you buy and upgrade the GM guns first, you have a better chance to win in GM, so it's easier to win OM. The more OM you win, the more upgrades and high rank guns you can buy, the more high rank guns and upgrades you buy, the more chance you have to win in GM...do you understand my logic noob? Good! When you feel confident about your shooting skills and you start having a good gun collection, you can challenge others in MP or try Headshot or Survival zone.
So that's pretty much the best way to enjoy this game. I suggest you explore all the menus in the game to understand it better. Also, come talk in the chat room with everyone and say hello...we are very friendly, but there are always some jackass to make fun of others...like myself.
Feel free to ask any question and you are almost certain to get an answer...or you can post them on this board, but it will take longer to get an answer since there is not a lot of people here. Don't take shortcuts (a.k.a. hack/cheats) to rank up faster, or we will bust you out and you'll get deleted. Play fair and stay polite...the same goes for you COBRA !!!
